Terrible Story

Once I met a man from the Belgian Congo who was amazed that my husband and I interpreted church services in American Sign Language. He told me that where he came from most people who discovered their children had disabilities would leave them out in the jungle for the tigers to eat. Christians in the area wouldn't do that, but even they had no way of communicating with deaf children or meeting other kids' special needs.
That was about forty years ago and I hope things have changed over there in the meantime, but there are many places in the world where people with disabilities don't get treated well. I'm glad to live in the United States.
